POSITION SUMMARY:
The Surgical Technician plays a vital role in the operating room by
assisting the surgical team in procedures. This position is
responsible for ensuring a sterile environment, handling surgical
instruments, preparing patients for surgery, and supporting
surgeons during procedures. The Surgical Technician must
demonstrate advanced knowledge of surgical protocols, aseptic
techniques, and ophthalmic instrumentation. This role requires a
high level of attention to detail, technical expertise, and the
ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced surgical
environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Prepare and maintain the sterile field in the operating room.
Ensure all surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment are
properly sterilized and readily available.
Assist in patient positioning, draping, and preparation for
surgery.
Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and provide appropriate
instruments and materials during procedures.
Operate and troubleshoot surgical equipment, including microscopes,
phacoemulsification systems, and laser devices.
Pass instruments and supplies to the surgeon in an efficient and
precise manner.
Monitor and maintain a sterile environment, following infection
control protocols.
Assist with hemostasis, wound closure, and dressing application as
directed by the surgeon.
Manage specimen collection and labeling in accordance with facility
policies.
Clean, disinfect, and sterilize surgical instruments following
proper protocols.
Assist in transporting patients to recovery areas as needed.
Restock surgical supplies and ensure equipment is in proper working
condition for future procedures.
Document surgical counts, instrument usage, and any intraoperative
complications or variances.
Adhere to all regulatory requirements, including HIPAA, OSHA, and
sterilization standards.
Participate in ongoing training and competency assessments to stay
up to date with surgical techniques and best practices.
Collaborate with surgical teams to identify areas for improvement
in efficiency, patient safety, and workflow.
REQUIREMENTS:
An associate or bachelor's degree in healthcare administration or a
related field is preferred.
3 years of progressive clinical experience in place of degree
considered.
Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program
required.
Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) required.
Minimum of two years of experience in an operating room setting,
preferably in ophthalmology.
Positive attitude and a love for helping others!
Prior experience in a fast-paced medical office and electronic
health records is preferred.
Dependable transportation is required to travel to other offices as
needed.
Must be flexible when traveling to various locations as needed.
Strong knowledge of sterile techniques, infection control
practices, and surgical instrumentation.
Proficiency in handling ophthalmic surgical equipment, including
phacoemulsification and laser systems.
Excellent attention to detail and ability to anticipate surgeon
needs.
Ability to work efficiently under pressure in a fast-paced surgical
environment.
Strong communication and teamwork skills to coordinate with
surgical staff, anesthesiologists, and nursing teams.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT:
- Exerting up to twenty-five pounds of force occasionally and/or a
negligible amount frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push,

hands, and/or fingers.
- Have close visual acuity to perform an activity, including
viewing a computer terminal, extensive reading, interpretation,
etc.
